Add a soundboard to OBS without a mixer graph
The clean OBS route is BordQ → VB-Cable Input → an Audio Input Capture source set to CABLE Output. OBS receives the soundboard as one controllable mixer channel, so you can mute it by scene, set its stream level, apply filters, and assign recording tracks without capturing every sound your PC makes.
The device selection is only half of the setup. Audio Monitoring determines whether the stream hears the source, whether you hear it locally, or both. Get that choice wrong—or capture the same signal through Desktop Audio as well—and one button press becomes doubled, delayed, or echoing audio.
Add a source; do not replace your OBS microphone.
Discord listens to a selected microphone device. OBS works differently: a scene contains sources. Click the plus button in Sources, add Audio Input Capture, create a source such as “BordQ Soundboard,” and choose CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable). Your normal microphone can remain its own source.
That separation is valuable. The soundboard gets its own fader, mute state, filters, sync offset, scene visibility, and track assignments. It also makes diagnosis obvious: if the BordQ channel meter moves, the route reached OBS even when your headphones are silent.

Dedicated cable source or Desktop Audio?
Both can put sound on stream, but they solve different problems. Capturing both is the usual cause of doubled sound.
- Audio Input Capture: CABLE Output
A clean BordQ channel with its own fader, filters, scenes, and tracks.
You must select both cable endpoints once.
Use this when viewers should hear the soundboard without also hearing every Windows notification.
- Desktop Audio
Capturing the complete speaker mix exactly as the computer plays it.
It also captures games, browsers, notifications, and anything else using that output.
Use it for the full desktop mix, but exclude the cable or monitoring device if BordQ already enters through its own source.
- Application Audio Capture
Isolating one supported Windows application directly in recent OBS versions.
Some applications or protected audio paths may not expose all sound.
Useful for a browser or game; keep the cable source for a stable, app-independent BordQ mix.
Route BordQ into OBS in five steps
Build one route, test its meter, then decide deliberately how monitoring should work before going live.
- Install BordQ and confirm VB-Cable exists
Install BordQ on Windows. Its installer includes the VB-Cable path, so a separate VoiceMeeter mixer is not required. If Windows has just added the virtual devices, restart before opening a long troubleshooting chain.
Windows should list CABLE Input under playback devices and CABLE Output under recording devices.
- Send the BordQ mix into the cable
Open BordQ Audio Setup. Choose your physical microphone if you want voice mixed with clips, then set Virtual Cable (Output) to VB-Cable Input. Trigger a short clip and confirm the BordQ output meter moves.
For a soundboard-only OBS channel, use no microphone input in BordQ and keep your mic as a separate OBS source.
- Create an Audio Input Capture source
In the correct OBS scene, click + in Sources, choose Audio Input Capture, create a new source named BordQ Soundboard, and select CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable). Reuse that same source in other scenes instead of creating multiple copies that capture the same device.
Expected result: the BordQ Soundboard meter in the OBS Audio Mixer moves when a clip plays.
- Set Audio Monitoring intentionally
Open Advanced Audio Properties from the OBS mixer. Start with Monitor Off when the stream or recording should hear the source and you already monitor through BordQ or another path. Choose Monitor and Output only when both you and the program output need it. Monitor Only sends it to the monitoring device while muting the main output.
OBS “Output” means the stream/recording mix; “Monitor” means the listening device selected in OBS Settings.
- Record a private test and check from another device
Make a short local recording with one clip, speech, and silence. Listen to the file—not only your headphones—and check a private stream from a phone if possible. Balance the source with its OBS fader and assign track 1 plus any isolated recording track you need.
A moving meter proves signal arrived; the recording or remote test proves the audience route is correct.
What the three OBS monitoring modes actually do
Monitoring controls your local listening path separately from the stream or recording output.
- Monitor Off — Program output only
The stream/recording hears it; OBS does not send another copy to your monitoring device.
- Monitor and Output — Headphones + program
You and the audience hear it. Safe only when the monitoring device is not captured back into OBS.
- Monitor Only (mute output) — Headphones only
Useful for a cue the audience must not hear. It is wrong for a soundboard intended for the stream.
If your monitoring device is also captured by Desktop Audio, monitoring can send the same source back into OBS and create a second copy.
Fix the source that is duplicated or missing
OBS problems are usually visible in the mixer. Watch which meters move before changing devices.
- The sound is doubled or echoing — Mute sources one at a time. Usually CABLE Output is captured once as Audio Input Capture and again through Desktop Audio or a second scene source. Keep one capture path and avoid monitoring into a device OBS also captures.
- The mixer moves, but you hear nothing — The source can still be reaching the stream with Monitor Off. Check a recording. If you need local listening, choose a dedicated Monitoring Device and use Monitor and Output—or monitor directly in BordQ.
- You hear it, but the recording is silent — Monitor Only (mute output) removes the source from the program mix. Change it to Monitor Off or Monitor and Output, and confirm track 1 is checked in Advanced Audio Properties.
- The source works in one scene only — Audio Input Capture is scene-aware. Add the existing BordQ Soundboard source to every needed scene, or place it in a nested utility scene. Do not create several independent sources for the same device.
Questions to settle before the stream starts
Do I need VoiceMeeter to route a soundboard into OBS?
No. BordQ can send directly to VB-Cable Input and OBS can capture CABLE Output as an Audio Input Capture source. VoiceMeeter is useful for complex multi-bus studios, but it is not required for this one-source route.
Should I use Monitor Off or Monitor and Output?
Use Monitor Off if you already hear BordQ through its own monitor or another direct path. Use Monitor and Output when OBS must also send the source to your headphones. Never monitor into an output that Desktop Audio captures unless you have deliberately designed for that second path.
Why does my OBS soundboard play twice?
The signal is almost always being captured twice: dedicated CABLE Output plus Desktop Audio, duplicate sources, or a monitored copy returning through the desktop device. Watch the mixer and mute channels until only one meter owns the clip.
Can the soundboard be on a separate recording track?
Yes. In Advanced Audio Properties, leave it on track 1 for the normal stream mix and add another enabled recording track for isolated editing. Make sure that track is also enabled under Settings → Output.
When is Desktop Audio the better choice?
Use Desktop Audio when you intentionally want the entire speaker mix and do not need independent control. For alerts, clips, and a soundboard that should survive device or app changes, the dedicated cable source is cleaner.
