Play music through your mic without pointing speakers at it
A microphone input is just an audio destination. A virtual audio cable creates a software playback device that a music app can send into and a software recording device that Discord, a game, Zoom, or another call can listen to. BordQ handles the mix and sends music, clips, and optionally your real microphone into that route.
This avoids the room noise and feedback of holding a phone near a mic, but it does not guarantee studio quality. Voice-chat apps deliberately remove non-speech sounds, compress bandwidth, and close the mic below a sensitivity threshold. The route can be perfect while the codec still makes music sound thin or underwater.
Audio enters one end of a cable and leaves as a microphone.
Programs that play audio choose an output device. Programs that record audio choose an input device. VB-Cable connects those two lists: playback goes into CABLE Input, and the identical signal becomes available from CABLE Output. The names describe the cable, not your app, which is why they initially feel backwards.
BordQ is the shortcut around juggling per-app Windows outputs. It plays files and browser audio, mixes your physical microphone when wanted, and sends the result to VB-Cable Input. In the voice app you select CABLE Output as the microphone.

Use a digital route, not an acoustic workaround
The right method depends on whether you need a repeatable mic signal or a one-off native share feature.

Play music through a microphone in five steps
Configure the route first, then tune the destination app for music rather than speech.
- Install BordQ and the virtual cable
Install BordQ on Windows and allow the setup path to add VB-Cable. Restart Windows after a first driver installation if the devices are not immediately visible. A virtual cable is a driver, so already-open apps may not refresh their device lists.
Look for CABLE Input in playback devices and CABLE Output in recording devices.
- Choose what enters the mix
In BordQ Audio Setup, choose your physical microphone if you want to speak over the music. Add music as a sound button, use a supported local file, or use Live Audio for browser playback. Set per-source levels before the call instead of using the destination app as the main mixer.
Start music below your speaking level; computer-generated audio is usually perceived as louder than a microphone.

Set Virtual Cable (Output) in BordQ to VB-Cable Input. Trigger audio and watch the BordQ meter. Do not set Windows system output to the cable unless you intentionally want every desktop sound—including notifications—to enter the mic route.
A dedicated BordQ output keeps the route predictable and avoids leaking unrelated desktop audio.
- Select CABLE Output as the destination microphone
Open the voice app, game, meeting, or recording tool and choose CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable) as its input. Use its microphone test before entering a live room. If you use Push to Talk, hold that key for the entire musical section.
The BordQ playback hotkey cannot override a destination app that has closed or muted its mic.
- Disable speech cleanup and test remotely
Turn off aggressive noise suppression, echo cancellation, automatic gain, voice isolation, and automatic sensitivity when music fidelity matters. Use headphones to avoid feedback, then listen from a second account or device because your local monitor bypasses the voice codec.
If the local signal is clean but the remote copy is damaged, the destination codec or processing—not VB-Cable—is the next place to adjust.
The voice-chat quality stack
Three separate systems can change the sound after it leaves BordQ.
- Noise suppression — Can erase instruments
Sustained notes, cymbals, ambience, and bass may be classified as background noise.
- Voice activity — Can cut quiet intros
Automatic sensitivity closes the route when a passage drops below the speech threshold.
- Voice codec — Prioritizes speech
Limited bitrate and speech-oriented encoding can reduce stereo width, transients, and low-frequency detail.
- Clean local route — Preserves the source
Reasonable levels, matching sample rates, and no clipping give the codec the best input possible.
Always judge quality at the far end of the call. Hearing the source locally does not reveal what the service encoded and transmitted.
Separate a routing problem from a codec problem
Where the damage first appears tells you which layer to fix.
- The music is clear locally but bad for everyone else — The cable route is working. Disable speech processing, use an original/high-fidelity audio mode when available, lower the source to avoid clipping, and accept that some game voice codecs remain speech-first.
- Quiet parts or the first beat disappear — Disable automatic input sensitivity or lower its threshold. With Push to Talk, press before playback starts and release after the final tail. Turn off noise gates in any extra headset software.
- People hear music but not your voice — Select the physical microphone inside BordQ so it joins the virtual mix, and enable Voice Overlap if you want it active during playback. The destination must listen to CABLE Output, not the hardware mic.
- Every Windows sound leaks into voice chat — Your system or music app is probably outputting directly to VB-Cable. Restore normal Windows speakers and send only BordQ to VB-Cable Input unless a full desktop feed is intentional.
Quality, permissions, and practical limits
Can I play Spotify through my microphone?
Technically, any audio that BordQ can route can enter a virtual microphone. Permission is separate from capability: Spotify states that its consumer service is for personal, non-commercial use, and a subscription generally does not grant public-broadcast rights. Check the service and destination rules for your use.
Can I play copyrighted music on a public stream?
Only when you have the necessary rights or authorization. Platforms such as Twitch warn that unauthorized music can lead to muted VODs, removed clips, takedowns, or account enforcement. Buying a track or subscribing to a music service usually grants private listening, not rebroadcast rights. This is general information, not legal advice.
Why does music sound underwater in voice chat?
Noise suppression and speech codecs try to remove non-speech content and spend limited data on intelligible voice. Turn off Krisp, voice isolation, echo cancellation, and automatic gain where appropriate, then use the app’s music or original-sound mode if it has one.
Can I talk while the music plays?
Yes. Choose your physical mic as BordQ’s microphone input and send the combined mix through VB-Cable. Keep music below the voice level and enable Voice Overlap when you want both active.
Will this work in games as well as Discord?
Yes when the game lets you choose CABLE Output as its microphone. Games with fixed default-device behavior may require setting that recording device as the Windows communications default, and their codecs may offer fewer quality controls.
Check the rights, not only the route
Routing software does not grant permission to rebroadcast a recording. Read the source and platform rules before public use.

- Configure Discord — Tune Voice Activity, Push to Talk, input sensitivity, and speech cleanup.
- Play audio in Zoom — Choose between native computer-sound sharing and a persistent mic route.
